conversion vans are awesome

Too bad you don’t see any Sprinter , ProBastard, and Transit conversions, or even Transit Connect conversion vans :(

I’ve had the same thought . I have often wondered why vans like the ultra luxurious vans I’ve seen from Japan haven’t been offered here.  Even if they didn’t sell well for private use I would think they would be great for a VIP livery type service.

They do offer high-luxury camper and passenger vans, but in low enough volumes they go unnoticed.

They’re actually around my area in decent numbers, usually with Mexican plates on them. I’d guess they’re a cheap enough and comfortable enough way to haul around a large family, and ones from around the Southwest won’t have a spec a rust anywhere to be found on them.

There’s a huge dealership near me that for quite awhile advertised based on the idea of having the largest selection of different styles of conversion vans in the country. They still seem to do a decent business on ones that have been turned into small luxury RVs; mainly based off of Mercedes Sprinters and Ford Econolines.

I just checked their website and they have a heck of a selection of conversion vans from Chevy and Mercedes.  I’m surprised I don’t see them from time to time just because of how popular that particular dealer is.

I want a conversion van.

I want to go anywhere and feel like I’m sailing a mighty yacht, and when I’m done, I can kick back and relax in the back, maybe turn on the TV to watch something on a ghetto setup involving an unnecessary amount of electrical components.

I live in the rust belt. On the rare occasion I do see one there are large pieces of the body that just aren’t there anymore.

I occasionally check them out on craigslist, but I’m somewhat concerned about being the 8th owner of a dirt cheap vehicle with shag carpet and a bed in the back.  With an RV you just toss the mattresses and replace them.  On a van that would be a much more expensive option.

I’ll see a few from time to time with livery services, but the problem there is that these things can get so expensive that you’re better served by either buying a Town Car (still the main livery car here) at the low end or a luxury bus at the high end.

I actually see a fair number of these ‘80s vans around. Most are in pretty beater condition.

These are all over salt lake. You can guess why.

I think there’s a few problems, really.

First off, minivans can be had with basically everything old-school full-size conversion vans had, except the third row converting to a bed. Sure, they’re not to the levels of something like an Alphard/Vellfire Royal Lounge, but... I’ll get to that.

Second, vans have reputation issues. Minivans are boring soccer mom vehicles, full-size vans are “rape vans”. This means that they’re not going to be an appealing luxury vehicle, they don’t portray the right image, and image is everything in luxury nowadays. (The trick is that the “rape van” stereotype mostly applies to low-roof American-style vans, AFAIK, so you do see high-roof vans as RVs and occasionally as limos (I mean, basically, the high-roof vans can have a full stripper pole in them, a normal limo can’t). Although low-roof also gets used as RVs, but generally with a high roof added on, or just the chassis used. )
